There are some seriously awful things happening around our world fuelled by hate, prejudice, jealously, insecurity, ignorance, and greed, and if you are anything like me, sometimes this just leaves us feeling scared, and pretty helpless. We do what we can for charities and we say our prayers, but it doesn’t feel enough. People are suffering, people are living in fear and it is so easy to feel inadequate, like we just could never do enough to make  difference.

I read a fantastic post a few weeks back, it was titled “Snapshots from my walk to work #prayforLondon“, on the blog Someplace Strange. In this post a quote from Fred Rogers was shared, and it is still so fresh and raw in my mind today. I found this quote really powerful, and it brings me such comfort. So I wanted to share it with you. Some of you may be familiar with it, but if you are not here it is,

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping. To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers — so many caring people in this world.”
Fred Rogers

It is so true, there are helpers everywhere, people who rush in even in the face of danger, these are beautiful people with amazing souls. And these people represent what is so magical, wonderful, and kind hearted about the human race. It is so easy to watch these horrible acts, and these heartbreaking attacks on innocent people and think that there is no good left in our world. But if we look for the helpers we will find the true soul of humanity.

We can look for the helpers to give us hope and we can be the helpers ourselves.

We can all make a positive difference each and everyday, and even if we are not rushing into danger, we can make a difference! Start by showing compassion, by educating yourself, by being tolerant, and by treating our neighbours like we would a friend.

We can fill the world with love and beauty, we can be kind to the person next to us, and the people who are far away. We can offer to share, and give love, we can celebrate our gifts and share them with the world. We are uniquely us, we have so much to offer, so much inner strength and beauty and we need to let it shine!

Each day that we allow ourselves to  shine our inner light across the world, we make a powerful difference.

We share our light with the person next to us, and then they share it on,  we give our gifts to others and that inspires them to give others their gifts. Next time you feel too small to make a difference know that actually you are not. Be true to who you are, share your enjoyment of life with others, be kind, give compliments, love freely, stop judging yourself, or others so harshly, shine your light, be exuberant and watch the people around you change for the better.

Each time we are kind to someone else, the world smiles a little more. Every little act of kindness, on top of every other little act of kindness, builds and builds. Each of us can make a difference. And together we can make the world a better place.

Ask yourself . . .

  • What can you do today to make someone else feel happy?
  • What can you do today to to show that you care about our world?
  • What can you do today to be kinder to yourself?
  • What can you do today that makes you feel proud?
  • What can you do today to show compassion?
  • What can you do today to make it a great day for someone else?
  • What can you do today to shine your light?

“We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say, ‘It’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.”

Fred Rogers
