It is easy to find yourself distracted these days, with seemingly little time to get things done when it feels like there are a million things that need to get done. In life’s busyness we can forget to listen to our bodies, our minds, and to that all important gut feeling, or intuition that is calling to us.

It can start as a whisper, a little ache that we find easy enough to ignore, we know we are tired, or feeling a little more emotional than we want to be, yet it is not ‘so bad’ so we ignore it. A little tiredness or pain is nothing when we have more important things to do, well so we think. The problems arise when we continue to ignore our intuition and we try to keep up with an unrealistic pace of life. Ignoring continuing stress on our physical body, and/or our mental stresses, we are bound to find ourselves unhappy, ill, or completely burnt out.

Slowing down, resting, listen to our intuition all sounds good on paper, but we live in the ‘real world‘, and things in the real world just don’t stop! It is true, they don’t, and I am not going to tell you they will. But what I will say is unless you are the only person who can save the world, then the world won’t fall apart if you take a rest! We all know that of course, but often we don’t act like that. We think if something doesn’t get done then it will lead to disaster. And OK maybe leaving a report or two will lead to that being 3 or 4 the next day, but the point is you will be able to tackle those better if you are heathy and have a clear mind. And yes leaving the ironing a day or two may lead to a bigger pile, but maybe some of those things could go un-ironed, the world won’t fall apart if you child wears a slightly creased T-shirt one day, and do we really need to iron PJ’s?

We are not superhero’s and sure it might feel like people expect us to be, but if you are truly honest with yourself it is usually ‘us’ that puts the pressure to be perfect onto ourselves. We expect things of ourselves that we would never expect of others! Honestly ask yourself, will the world fall apart if I go to bed a little earlier tonight? Will it fall apart if I leave the beds unmade tomorrow and sleep in instead? Will it fall apart if I take a day off work because I am really sick? You may be tempted to answer ‘yes’ because this is the dialogue you are used to having with yourself, but the answer is no! It really is. If your child misses an after school activity because you are unwell it will be OK, you have to make your wellbeing a priority! It is better to miss one day of work, than a week, or month down the track because you didn’t take care of you!

Even with a never ending to-do list, it is so important to take the time we need to check in with our mind and body. Reflect on what we need in order to be healthy and happy. It is easy to go on neglecting ourselves and not listening to our intuition, but a day to ourselves, or going to be early for a week, or taking a walk, a bath, reading a book, or relaxing with a friend can benefit our well being much more than an hour of ironing, or vacuuming.

When you take time to check in with yourself you begin to cultivate a healthier relationship with yourself, and this will make it easier to stay healthy both physically and mentally, and in turn you will become more productive in your life, rather than less.
