It’s hard to believe we have been in our new home for 6 weeks! It feels like we have done so much, and yet it has gone so fast! There are still what feels like a million things to do, like sorting out the garden, putting up the wall paper I chose, sorting out the garage and the many boxes still left full of goodies like all my fav books!

But we have a doormat: (available from Clickon furniture).

Does it feel like home yet?

In many ways it does, the ways that count I guess. We feel safe here and happy. In other ways though it has felt like we are staying somewhere temporarily and we will move back to our old home eventually. Does that make sense? Obviously we will not be moving back to our old home, that is home to a new family now, and we wouldn’t choose to go back even if we could. But it still feels a little like we are ‘playing house’ here.

I think part of it is you spend so long anticipating the move, waiting for the house to be ready and then for all the legalities to go through  and somehow it feels like it is never going to happen, and then suddenly one day it all happens, and you get the keys and suddenly it’s real! You have a new home, you can actually move in! And now it is no longer a dream, we are here and it feels surreal. In many ways living in this area always felt out of our reach, so maybe that is part of it, maybe that is why it feels like I am living in some kind of dream world, wondering how did I get here? How are we so lucky?

The decision to move was so spontaneous and we are not spontaneous people! We usually procrastinate forever and a day. But this choice felt so right for our family, and this home kind of fell into our lap, I feel very fortunate. Yes it is a lot smaller than our country home was, but we are exactly where we want to be, and to have the children’s school 2 minutes away and all our friends so close is just amazing.

For me it’s been adding the personal touches that have made it feel homely, things like family pictures, and styling the house with ‘my style’. I know I have said it before, but we really need to remember when we style our home that we style it for ‘us’ and not for others. Our own home is not a design competition, it doesn’t have to be ‘on trend’, it has to be the place that feels like ‘our home‘! We have to decide what makes us feel comfortable and what reflects our unique personality. The minute we start styling for others we loose our sense of self, and the one place we should have that sense of self is in ‘our own homes’.

I have had heaps of fun styling the kids rooms, and you can see some of Aprils room HERE, I will get some pics of all their rooms up for you to see over the next few weeks. A couple of weeks ago I had a guy come out and measure up for some curtains, and this week I finally made it to the showroom with my mum and we poured over all the options, after my usual procrastination I have finally made my choices, YAY! I am actually very comfortable having bare windows at the moment, I like being able to look out. I don’t even mind that it is light in our bedroom at night from the street lights, but it does make walking around topless a bit tricky lol. The girls are the only ones with curtains so far, we were able to bring theirs from our previous home. I went back and forth on my decision with the curtains. I made a choice and then changed my mind. I was originally going for one look downstairs as it is all open plan. But my heart was not agreeing with my head! So I have finally gone with my heart and it feels great. Like I said our home is our own and even if other people think my choice is weird I have to be happy, I have to feel like I am in a space that I am in love with. (Luckily hubby is happy with my choices too, he mainly leaves styling up to me, but will object if he really doesn’t like something). The curtains will be another month or so away (I of course had to choose a fabric not in stock). But I am happy to wait for what I really want rather than settle for an easy option.

The garden is something I really want to do, but it is winter here now and even though a lot of people believe it rains a lot in Melbourne it really doesn’t. But lately we have finally had a good amount of rain and the grass in all squishy and wet, so we haven’t made a start on the garden yet. Our plan is to make a start when spring comes around. For now we have grass and just a small garden out the front. I have added some pot plants at the front and some hanging string balls with succulents in them just to make it feel a bit prettier. I love pretty things.

Our succulent balls were found at Salamanca Market in Hobart, we brought them back with us.

Adding some other little touches has made it feel more like home, like having fresh flowers around the house and burning my candles. I am also a huge fan of throw blanket and in Melbourne they are super handy, to me curling up with a pretty throw and a cuppa just relaxes me.

So that is where we are at right now. More and more it feels like a home, we are all still adjusting to this new place and hubby’s new job, but we have each other and we have a safe, beautiful home, so life is good! How about you, what is happening in your home right now? Have you just moved? Are you renovating, or content with how things are? Love to hear your thoughts, so pop a comment below. Have  a great week.

Thanks for joining me, love Mac xx
