One of the best pieces of advice I ever received was ‘start a blog“! You may or may not know this about me, but I am working on a novel, and on this one particular morning whilst typing away at a local coffee shop (because yes a girl needs coffee to function, well this girl anyway), my girlfriend arrived for a catch up. She asked me what I was up to, and being shy about my writing I responded coyly that I am working on a book (because let’s face it I would love it to tun into an actual book someday). She was super excited and mentioned I should start a blog. The thought had crossed my mind before, I knew a mum from kinder who had her own blog which promotes sexy adult books and she said it was the best thing she’s ever done, but I wasn’t sure I was interesting enough that anyone would want to read anything I had to say, so I just laughed it off.

By the time I came back with our coffees she had googled how to start a blog (I hadn’t even read a blog before so I knew nothing about blogging). She was so encouraging and by the time I got home the thoughts were running around in my mind. Things just flowed from there, once I watched a tutorial with bluehost I was a goner. I was all in and excited about this new venture! Things just flew from there, the trickiest thing for me was choosing a name for my website. I really enjoyed choosing a theme and getting everything set up to go.

People talk about how before starting a blog you should really research a lot of other blogs and decide what it is you want to blog about. It makes sense and you should probably follow it, but clearly I didn’t. In some ways I think it helped me that I didn’t read other blogs before I started. I could just write freely without comparing myself to anyone else. Now my confidence has grown I can happily read lots of other blogs and I love hearing what lots of other mums are up to, I love photography blogs and I love inspirational blogs that help make me grow as a person. I love reading blogs and I love blogging. I have had some insecure moments along the way, doubts that I can do this, and moments where I truly wonder why anyone wants to read my words. But I have never felt more alive, more fulfilled. Writing is my passion and when you find what you are passionate about you really should go for it!

The advice I received to start a blog was the best advice because it was the push I needed to follow my dream of writing, I honestly didn’t expect to get some amazing feedback and for my blog to grow in such a short amount of time to where it is today. Sometimes the advice we are given is not going to suit us, it may be someone else’s agenda, but sometimes it is just what we need to hear. We may not always realise it straight away, but if you let it sit with you for a while and you feel that maybe that person was on to something then go with it. If it feels right in your gut then take a chance and allow yourself the freedom to follow your dreams, that is the best advice I can give you!
