Ever had that moment where someone says something and you are like WHAT? Where did that come from? Having kids, or just being around kids this happens quite a bit. The other day Adam (my five year old, soon to be six) was playing Mario on the Wii U when he happily turned to me and said he had 5 lives and this was great because he was five!

“Yes, but you will be six soon”, was my response.

“Oh no”! Adam exclaims. So this surprised me as he has been counting down the sleeps, telling anyone he can that it’s soon his birthday. He has been super excited, so why the oh no response?

“What’s wrong with turning six”? I enquire.

“My body won’t work as good”. He explains. What?????

“What do you mean”? I ask, really wanting to know.

“Well daddy is 40 now and his body doesn’t work very good”! SAY WHAT?????? I mean yes daddy may complain about the odd sore back, but he is healthy and active, he walks the dogs daily, cooks, builds things around the house, plays rough with Adam, there is no real evidence of his body not working so well, well as far as I can tell. Maybe a five year old looks at his parents bodies as pretty pathetic?

“Daddy’s body is working just fine”. I say.

“But not like mine”. Well I can’t argue that.

“Maybe when you are six you will be even stronger” I suggest. His little face lights up!

“Wow that would be cool”! He exclaims. “Aspen (his eleven year old sister) is older an she is stronger than me, so I will be stronger when I’m six”. With that sorted he is all excited about his birthday again and he turns back to his game. Discussion over!

In two sleeps my baby boy turns six! Where did the time go? His upcoming birthday both excites and scares me. I miss having my newborn, I miss having my toddler, but he is so sweet at this age too. Gaining independence, yet also showering me with kisses, hugs and loads of I love you mummy, or you’re so pretty mummy. He is adorable. Kids really do say the most interesting things.
