Last weekend was as hectic as ever, sport, sleep overs, birthday parties to attend, a good clean of all our animals homes and bath time for puppies. Eye drops and medicine for child number 3, not to mention tackling the mess in his room (how can someone so little make such a mess!) Sunday he decided that it was his Minecraft Pigs birthday, yes even though Piggy has been with us less than a couple of months it was his birthday! With all the soft toys my children accumulate we could open a toy store!! As much as these soft toys often drive me nuts my 3 children LOVE their teddies.

Aspen decided she would bake piggy a cake, it was actually very sweet given that she is 13. She told me she remembered a time when I made a little party for her teddies and she told me she wanted Adam to experience that too! It was so adorable. April agreed and they asked him what sort of cake Piggy would like.

  • Vanilla
  • Pink icing
  • With a pig face

Out came the recipe books, and of course we were out of butter. So after a trip to the local shops, the girls began baking. My sons face was priceless! After we sang happy birthday, and ate cake which was totally delicious, it was time for playing the game Hedbanz, it was actually a lot of fun! If you have little ones aged 7+ then I highly recommend this game.

Life is busy, crazy and yes I had other things I needed to do, but creating priceless memories sometimes just has to be a priority.

Here are some ideas for spending time with our kids that are just as much fun for us as they are for them.

  • Play hide and seek, kids love it and you get the chance to be a big kid.

  • Going for a bike ride, sometimes we forget how much fun this is. It is a great way to get fresh air and awesome exercise.
  • Walking the dog. Walking with our children actually creates a great opportunity for conversation.
  • Playing board games. Keep them appropriate to age to avoid frustration. The funnier the games the more fun you will all have.
  • Teaching kids to bake or cook a meal. Kids love getting involved in the kitchen.

  • Picnics. It can be just as fun to have an indoor picnic too. Pull out a picnic rug, make up some little sandwiches and fruit on sticks. Some yummy cookies for a treat, or even fairy bread. Get your children involved in preparing for the picnic, assign them little jobs. Half the fun is in the preparation.
  • Go swimming with them. Often we take them for swimming lessons, but fun play in the pool is great for bonding. Jump in with them they will love it.
  • Bush walking. Kids are fascinated by nature, get out and explore.
  • Teddy Bear Tea Parties. You can organise this in advance. Have your child make invites for their teddies a week or a few days before. Pop them in your mail box. Then plan a food menu, and a couple of games. On the day have your child get the teddies ready by pretending to brush their teeth, or do their hair for the party. Set up a little table or blanket. Wrap prizes for games in a towel or blanket, no need to spend money or waste paper. Prizes can be things your child already has, like rubbers, or pencils. Or a prize could even be a note saying you get a big hug from daddy etc. Keep it short and sweet. Depending on your child’s age they can help prepare snacks and tidy up afterwards too, or use pretend play food.

  • Playing sport. Just playing catch, even with a balloon if they are little is such fun. It also can create a great opportunity for chatting together.

What things do you love doing with your children/nieces or nephews? Any suggestions?
