For the sake of authenticity I will confess, I feel like crap today. It is Monday after all.

I woke up, but felt like I hadn’t woken up. You know that feeling right? The one where your eyes are open, but they keep wanting to shut! Then you drag yourself out of bed. You stand up, but you still feel asleep. You have a shower and it feels so good, it’s warm and comforting on your tired body. You wrap yourself in a fluffy towel and then all you want to do is hop back into bed.

But life awaits! Reality awaits! It is Monday and in this house that means 3 children to get up, and at the moment 2 dogs to get up. Counting my hubby, the kids, chickens, dogs and myself that is 12 breakfasts to get dished up! Now the chickens are already awake, and the dogs are busting to get outside to go to the toilet, but the children are not so excited that it’s time to rise and shine!

Other than the pets we are not exactly morning people around here! Hubby used to be, when we first met he was an early riser, but as he approaches 40 he enjoys a little sleep in. I have always been a night owl. It was tortuous with newborns, all those early morning feeds!!!!!!! All I can say is lucky my babies were all super cute! Now they are aged between 5 and 10, they also enjoy a sleep in. Sometimes this is a blessing, like on weekends! We are so lucky as we are those rare adults with children who sleep past 5 and 6 am on weekends.

The downside is . . . . .School mornings! Dragging them out of their cosy beds is like dealing with a grumpy teenagers! They don’t want to budge. And how can I judge them when I would rather be in bed too!

And yes this morning was one of those mornings. I just wanted my bed! I was that stubborn, grumpy, difficult teenager. But as a mum I had no choice, I had to get to my ‘mum’ job!

Adam has decided as punishment for waking him up I have to spoon feed him his Weetbix (like a baby). I am tempted to argue that he is capable of shoving junk food in his mouth without assistance, but arguing with a 5 year old first thing in the morning is a bad way to start the day! (Pick your battles Mac).

April age 7 (nearly 8), takes around 40 minutes to consume 1 Weetbix! And no I am not exaggerating. She has got to be the slowest eater in the entire universe. I just don’t understand it, I really don’t! And in April’s case it is not just Weetbix that takes her forever to eat, it’s everything. You can imagine how much she drives her siblings crazy at Easter. Long after they gobble down their chocolate eggs, April has only eaten one.

Aspen eats and gets dressed fast, that is not the problem. The problem is getting her to do those things in the first place. She would rather play with the animals, wander aimlessly around the house and message her friends all morning.

When we are finally ready it’s a mad dash to school before the bell goes, whilst dodging kangaroos (I kid you not) along the way. And I still feel like I want to crawl back to bed. It’s one of those days that requires lipstick!

My day gets better. I do some shopping and have coffee catch up time with a great friend. All great now, feeling awake finally. Load up the car, hop in and OUCH! I knocked my thumb nail on the roof of the car, causing my nail to half rip off. Blood is going everywhere (OK not everywhere, but there is a lot). Picture this, it is torn back halfway, skin exposed, blood dripping. I promptly use my nurse training skills and pull out my car’s first aid kit. At that point I realised it does pay to be prepared. After patching myself up I drive home.

After school, I have one child with a sore finger (I mean you would think her finger is falling off, it isn’t), I get no sympathy for more blood encrusted thumb, she gets plenty for her sore finger. (Life as a mum). My son is so tired, he is tired everyday after school. He seems to cry at everything and anything and between you and me, it’s driving me crazy! (I was totally sane before kids, OK I guess I wasn’t).

So I am having a whine! Everyone is entitled now and then. Yes even us superhero mums. I am grateful every day for my gorgeous children, the chickens and the dogs (even though when I returned home from shopping Holly had left me a present, a smelly present on my floor). And I am so thankful for my hubby who deals with all the chaos by my side.

Life is hectic, by it’s wonderful too. My little man Adam made me a sweet picture today. It’s him and I, look how happy we are!

Despite the moments of frustration today, the tiredness, the sore and now extremely ugly thumb, there was still plenty to smile about today. So here are a few things that made me smile today!

  • Coffee with my friend
  • snuggles and hugs with my children and hubby
  • school readers
  • shopping, and buying April some birthday gifts I know she will love
  • Wrapping up Easter gifts for the school teachers
  • Going to the schools Easter service and seeing my girls sing in the choir
  • A delicious dinner my gorgeous hubby made
  • How cute my puppy is
