Children are our future, thank goodness because some adults out there trying to run the world are doing a pretty crappy, (that is my polite word as I want to add many more, not so polite words) job! The problem is many of those adults were once born as innocent as our children, but something went seriously wrong along the way.

Do we blame their parents? Do we blame television? Advertising agencies? Do we lay it all on society as a whole? Or perhaps let’s just blame the politicians that came before now. Do we even take some of the blame because we have not stood up enough to these people? It is easy to point fingers, to sit back and think we are ‘one’ person, so how could we even attempt to make a difference? It might be easier, but it just leaves a bd taste in my mouth.

If one pebble can make a ripple across a lake, then can’t we make a ripple too? We have been made to feel small, unimportant, a mere speck on the universe. So what do we do, as women, as men, as teachers, as parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, how do we make things better for our children? How can we possibly ensure they have a better world to live in?

We do it by believing. Believing in ourselves, by believing in them and by believing in each other. We stand up to the bullies, we stand up to those people in our lives that make us feel unworthy, unlovable, or helpless. We lead the way by being role models, we show them that we have a voice and we will use it. We teach them to use their voices, we don’t say children should be seen and not heard! They are the voices we should be hearing!

I am not saying we all have to join a picket line, but go ahead if you wish to! We can all make a difference, big, small, in-between, it doesn’t matter! What matters is we stop being pushed around by people in our lives who are trying to drag us down, or stomp all over our dreams and happiness. We can write letters, we can protest, we can use our individual talents like art, sport, writing, science to make a positive change in our own little world that will create a ripple effect and begin to inspire change in others.

Little by little, with kindness, with positivity, with persistence and power, with love, with bravery, with vulnerability and creativity we will change the world. We will inspire our children to fight for what is good, for what is right, for equality, for freedom.

There will always be excuses, there will always be challenges both physical and emotional, but we have to teach our children to respect themselves, to be inquisitive, to listen to their gut, to stand up to bullies both little and giant. We need to teach them compassion, empathy, and strength. We can show them that they are not too little to make a difference. They will change the world.

Make it a better place
For you and for me
And the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make it a better place
For you and for me”
